Close to Nature :: Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in January

Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge is a good place to go during fall and winter time when insect repellent is not needed. Otherwise those little bugs are quite annoying. It is a migrating-resting and feeding area of more than 200 species of birds. It is also called "home" by a wide variety of wildflowers, plants, as well as turtles, snakes, fogs, fish, deermuskrat, raccoons, and fox.

One interesting story is, in 1960s, there was a year-long legal battle that local residents against Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officials wishing to turn the Great Swamp into a major regional airport to supplement Newark Airport's ability to accommodate large jet aircraft. Of course, finally the local residents won and we have the opportunity standing on the observation deck to have a closer watch of the wildlife!
